Marquez’s MotoGP century overshadowed by appalling accident
Jorge Martin triggered an ugly crash on the first lap of the Grand Prix of Hungary at Balaton Park.

The factory Ducati rider defeated KTM star Pedro Acosta after a mid-race duel.

Once the seven-time premier class champion made his move for the lead at the Turn 8 and 9 chicane, he stepped out to a handy lead to leave Acosta in his wake.

Marquez’s teammate Francesco Bagnaia completed the podium in a distant third while Jack Miller’s quest for a top four finish with Pramac ultimately wound up with him fading to eighth.

It’s the first time Marquez has won since Misano, Italy in 2025 – ending a 266-day drought.

ABSOLUTE CARNAGE ON LAP 1 😱

There was drama just a few hundred metres into the race when 2024 champion Jorge Martin lost control of his Aprilia RS-GP26 entering Turn 1.

In an instant, Martin turned his bike into a bowling ball as he cleaned out teammate Marco Bezzecchi, Aprilia satellite rider Raul Fernandez for Trackhouse, Gresini rider Fermin Aldeguer, and Fadio Di Giannantonio of VR46.

Aprilia confirmed Martin and Bezzecchi escaped serious injury, only suffering contusions.

Di Giannantonio remounted his bike and eventually finished 13th.

From pole position, Marquez looked like he had a slow getaway, but in the second phase of the start got the holeshot into the first turn ahead of Acosta.

Among those to benefit from the first corner madness was Miller, who rose to fith.

At the end of Lap 1 it was Marquez from Acosta and Bagnaia. Honda rider Luca Marini was fourth from Miller, Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha), Diogo Moreira (LCR), Enea Bastianini (Tech3), Joan Mir (Honda), and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pramac).

When Marini messed up the braking zone at Turn 1 on Lap 2, Miller grabbed fourth place.

On the same lap, Acosta shot to the lead with a pass on Marquez into Turn 5.

Basianini got given a long-lap penalty on Lap 7 for an unsafe rejoin. He went too deep into Turn 1 and then swung his KTM RC16 and across the nose of Mir’s Honda RC213V, making contact.

Bastianini fell from seventh to 11th as a result, behind Razgatlioglu.

Acosta and Marquez left Bagnaia in their wake. The #63 Desmosedici GP26 trailed by more than five seconds to the second-placed #93 at the race’s halfway mark.

Miller, meanwhile, led a road train of riders. He gave up fourth on Lap 11 and briefly lost out to Moreira on Lap 12, but the Brazilian ran wide and gave the Australian the place back.

The battle for the lead raged on Lap 14 as Acosta and Marquez traded places, corner after corner.

At the end of the lap, they rubbed shoulders through Turn 16 as Acosta put him a resilient defensive ride.

A lap later at the Turn 8 and 9 chicane, Marquez repeated his earlier efforts. On the second time of asking, he made sure to place Acosta awkwardly mid-corner to cost him valuable time.

That was the race-winning move for Marquez, who skipped away from Acosta.

A mistake by Miller on Lap 17 at Turn 1 opened the door for Ogura to demote the #43 to sixth.

Miller continue to fade and ultimately lost out to Marini and Moreira to settle into seventh before Gresini rider Iker Lecuono got by on the last lap.

Marquez leaves Balaton Park on 108 points. Bezzecchi has retained his lead in the standings on 180 points ahead of Martin on 160 and Di Giannantonio on 138 points.
